George Barris, Creator of the 1966 TV Batmobile, Dies at 89

We here at Legions of Gotham are sad to announce the passing of a Batman legend, the King of the Kustomizers, George Barris.  Fans will remember Barris as the man who fabricated the iconic 1966 television series Batmobile from a Lincoln Futura concept car.  The amazing work that Barris did to bring the Batmobile to life on the small and silver screens still endures today as one of the favorite Batmobiles of fans everywhere.

George's son Brett posted the following statement on Facebook early on Thursday morning:

"Sorry to have to post that my father, legendary kustom car king George Barris, has moved to the bigger garage in the sky," Brett Barris wrote. "He lived his life the way he wanted til the end. He would want everyone (to) celebrate the passion he had for life and for what he created for all to enjoy."

Our deepest condolances to George's family and friends,  1925-2015, R.I.P George, we can't thank you enough for the memories.

Batman Solo Movie May Be Based on Under the Red Hood

Fans will recall that the whole modern Red Hood story arc began with Hush over a decade ago and carried into a story that resurrected the long thought dead Jason Todd.  The Batman v Superman trailer that showed this image clued many in to the possibility of this being explored:

Now, Joblo has some more details worth checking out.  If this is true, then there are a lot of complex themes to examine in the course of one film.  Lets hope that Ben Affleck is up to the task of doing justice to the comic books.  Thus far, not much consideration has been given to the comics from Hollywood, aside from the occasional vague reference.

Long ‘Missing’ 1962 Mel Ramos Batman May Bring $100K+ At Auction

Long ‘missing’ 1962 Mel Ramos Batman painting, traded for a pile of comic books, may bring $100K+ at auction

“A Sinister Figure Lurks in the Shadows” at Heritage Auctions, Oct. 28, 2015, in Dallas; one of five missing paintings from Ramos’ famous early ‘60s super hero series

DALLAS – A famed and long-considered missing early Mel Ramos painting depicting Batman at his baleful best, A Sinister Figure Lurks in the Dark, 1962, has surfaced in southern California and may well bring more than $100,000 when offered at Heritage Auctions on Nov. 14, 2015.

It was 1962 and California resident Bill Steinfelt found himself in the area where an undiscovered young painter named Mel Ramos, then a teacher, had set up shop. The two talked comic books – Ramos was a collector and Steinfelt had comics – before agreeing, at the end of Steinfelt’s stay, to trade a pile of his comic books for one of the terrific super hero paintings Ramos had in his workshop.

“He had all of these comic books drawn up quite well,” said Steinfelt. “When I went to leave later that month he wanted a bunch of my comic books. I didn’t want to sell my collection, but I said ‘I’ll take one of your drawings and you can have these comic books.’ He had a bunch of them, but I thought this was the best one.”

Steinfelt chose wisely, setting his eye on A Sinister Figure Lurks in the Shadows, a heady and dynamic rendering of Batman that he has had with him for more than half a century. That pile of comic books, which Steinfelt describes as “a bunch of old books,” is now potentially worth $100,000 or more.

“This painting of Batman not only epitomizes the truly incredible talents of Mel Ramos, but also exudes the simplicity and invincibility of all comic book heroes with whom we have grown to love,” said Leon Benrimon, Director of Modern & Contemporary Art at Heritage Auctions, New York. “This work poignantly reveals one of Ramos' five missing paintings from his comic book series, the artist's first mature body of work. It’s got a great story to tell.”

As a California born artist, Mel Ramos has distinguished himself as an Expressionist with a fascination with popular culture and mass media images. A Sinister Figure Lurks in the Shadows is a powerfully rendered canvas with strong impasto and dramatic brushstrokes, indicating the impending action and sharp instincts of our hero. Here, immersing us into his fantastical world and placing our omnipotent hero against a fleshy, cream-colored background, Ramos truly brings Batman to life, ready for action.

Heritage Auctions is the largest auction house founded in the United States and the world’s third largest, with annual sales of approximately $900 million, and 900,000+ online bidder members. Confirmed: New Justice League Cartoon, "JLA", IS In Development at Cartoon Network

We reported last month that a new Justice League cartoon may be in the works after a picture leaked from Cartoon Network headquarters that featured a poster that indicated as such.  Legions of Gotham has been famous for well over a decade for our scoops in the world of animated Batman, and as such we have made a lot of contacts within the industry.  I have obtained sufficient confirmation from enough reliable contacts to confirm for the fans that this series IS in development at Cartoon Network.

Its important to note that Cartoon Network was hoping to keep this one under wraps, so the liklihood of much leaking out in the way of spoilers before they officially announce is very small.  The old days of the internet are long gone, when people close to a series could get away with giving the fans peeks into what they're working on.  Contracts are now very tight and restricting, so we will all have to be patient and wait....something we're not so used to in today's world.

More as its available on the Justice League cartoon!

Breaking News: Bill Finger To Finally Get Official Batman Credit

The Hollywood Reporter has just broke the news that Bill Finger, co-creator of Batman, will finally be getting the credit he deserves, beginning with Gotham season 2 and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.  There is no word on exactly how that credit will read, but this is a huge victory for Finger's family and the legions of fans that have been pushing for this for so very long.

The official statement from DC Entertainment is as follows:

DC Entertainment and the family of Bill Finger are pleased to announce that they have reached an agreement that recognizes Mr. Finger’s significant contributions to the Batman family of characters. "Bill Finger was instrumental in developing many of the key creative elements that enrich the Batman universe, and we look forward to building on our acknowledgement of his significant role in DC Comics’ history," stated Diane Nelson, President of DC Entertainment. "As part of our acknowledgement of those contributions," Nelson continued, "we are pleased to confirm today that Bill Finger will be receiving credit in the Warner Bros. television series Gotham beginning later this season, and in the forthcoming motion picture Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice."

Here at Legions of Gotham we have had a page up for well over a decade attributing much of what makes Batman the Dark Knight we all know and love to Bill Finger.

Snyder Says Batman v Superman is more Bats than Supes!

Batman v Superman director Zack Snyder told the Daily Beast recently that the film will focus a bit more on Batman and his placement in the new DC Cinematic Universe.

“Only in that because it’s a different Batman than the Batman that was in the Chris Nolan movies, so we have a little bit more explaining to do—and you just had a whole Superman movie,” confirmed Snyder. “But I think only in that way, because you need to understand where Batman is with everything. And that’s more toward the beginning, but it evens back out as it goes on.”

Michael Keaton Turns 64 Today!

Michael Keaton, one of the all-time fan favorite Batman actors, turns 64 today on Saturday, September 5, 2015.  Keaton, whose real name is Michael John Douglas, began is illustrious career in films like Night Shift (1982) and lead roles in comedies like Johnny Dangerously (1984) and Mr. Mom (1983).

Known primarily as a comedian, fans were learly when he was cast as Batman in what was supposed to be a dark and serious Batman movie.  Keaton had worked with director Tim Burton on Beetlejuice, an association that helped him land the role in Batman (1989).  Keaton would go on to star in Batman and Batman Returns (1992), before parting ways with the franchise, due to the exit of Tim Burton in the director's chair.

Many fans still hold out hope that Keaton will be called upon to portray an aging Batman in a big screen Dark Knight Returns adaptation one day.

Happy Birthday Michael!

A New JLA Animated Series May Be Coming To Cartoon Network!

A Reddit user that was touring Cartoon Network took this picture of some of their new show posters and a JLA poster was included.  This is clearly not for the Bruce Timm Justice League or Justice League Unlimited shows, as their names were never presented as the JLA.  There was a JLA: Trapped in Time direct to DVD feature last year, but that doesn't appear to be related.

It shouldn't come as a shock to fans that a new JLA (Justice League of America) cartoon is in the works over at Cartoon Network.  After all, the DC Comics cinematic universe includes an upcoming Justice League film, and lets face it Batman v Superman may as well be a Justice League trial run at this point.

Details on cast and crew are not yet available.  Legions of Gotham will continue to dig with our sources and report any updates as they are revealed!

Remembering Yvonne Craig -- TV's 60s Batgirl

Yvonne Craig was the very first live action incarnation of the iconic character of Batgirl. She joined the 60s Batman series for its third and final season.  Her presence on the series managed to breath some new life into the series for the brief time that she was on.

Craig did all of her own stunts on the show, including the riding of the Batgirl cycle.  She kept her secret identity as Commissioner Gordon's daughter and librarian a secret from the Caped Crusaders.

Batgirl did a great PSA for the Federal Equal Pay Law back in 1973.

Yvonne Craig passed away at the age of 78 on Monday night.  She was at rest in her home, suffering from breast cancer that had metastasized to her liver.
