Batman Solo Film Titled: 'The Batman' According To Affleck

Ben Affleck recently confirmed that the title that is currently being used for the solo Batman film that he is co-developing is The Batman and that the script is coming along nicely. When Batman premiered in the Golden Age of comic books he was often referred to as 'The Batman' instead of simply Batman. The movie will share its title with the 2004 Jeff Matsuda helmed cartoon of the same name.

Stay tuned to Legions of Gotham for the latest on The Batman.

Why Gotham Is Wrong - Superheroes DO Work On TV!

I recently wrote a news piece for Screen Rant about the comments that Gotham show runner Bruno Heller made about Superheroes not working on television and follow-up clarification from executive producer Ken Woodruff.

Bruno Heller was at the Edinburgh Television Festival this past August, when he blurted out the following:

"I don’t think superheroes work very well on TV. Probably because of the costume thing."

Heller went on to say:

"TV is about real people and faces and not so much about magic and the supernatural things"
Really? Really Bruno? I think viewers of HBO's Game of Thrones may differ in that opinion, especially since Gotham averaged 4 million viewers per episode last season and Game of Thrones averaged 22 million. Executive producer Ken Woodruff tried to further clarify Heller's comments while promoting Gotham season three to the Hollywood Reporter:
“I think I can help clarify his statement. There’s a reason why he chose to develop a show that took place before the actual fully realized Batman. He thought that was the best way to tell stories on the medium of television. It was about the origins and it was about real people and how they evolved and became the villains and heroes that we know and we’ve seen in comics and in feature films. A lot of that is just pragmatic and TV is a much more intimate medium sometimes than film can be. You’re living with these people, you’re spending 22 hours with them over the course of a season as opposed to two hours. They’re in your living room. They’re part of your life in a much more intimate way than maybe film characters can be. When you have a cape on and you’re a superhero, there’s a level of attachment there. They’re otherworldly and godlike in that way. That’s what Bruno was talking about.”

Interestingly, the CW Network has a plethora of DC Comics shows with weekly costumed superheroes that are working just fine. The Flash, for example, enjoys nearly the same ratings as Gotham and is on a network with far less exposure than Fox. Supergirl, which recently moved from CBS to the CW to join the other DC Comics shows, beat out Gotham in the ratings hands down last season. Why then, pray tell, does everyone think that superheroes cannot work on television?

Apparently, as usual, DC Comics is trailing behind Marvel. I say that with begrudging fan frustration, because I'm a DC guy through and through, but lets face facts...the Netflix Daredevil series has proven that costumed heroes and intimate "real world" storytelling can mix to produce amazing results, the kind of results that you just can't get from squeezing a bunch of characters on the big screen for two hours. That may be one of the big reasons why films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad are getting such a harsh reception from the fans...perhaps we just demand more in today's world?

Bottom line is that its been fifty years since fans have been given a Batman television show. Its long overdue at this point, if you ask me. If you want to do Batman in the box office, fine. Do a series...a REAL series (no prequels and stay closer to accepted versions of the characters) and then release the season finales to the theater as movie events. I guarantee you'll garner more loyalty and respect from viewers and a lot less criticism for rushed, muddled and half-assed characterization and storytelling. If you need a model DC Comics, go watch Daredevil on Netflix.

Happy Birthday Adam West! Batman Turns 88 Today!

Yeah, the classic television Batman himself, Adam West, turns 88 today! Mr. West and his portrayl of Batman are among my first memories as a child. He was gracious enough to give me one of my first ever interviews back in 2003 and was again a gentlemen and wrote the preface for my first book, Batman's Arsenal: An Encyclopedic Chronicle. A very happy birthday to you Adam West, and many happy returns.

Batman: The Animated Series VR Virtual Reality Experience Coming To Viewmaster!
Mattel is bringing Batman: The Animated Series back to life in a really fun way. The new virtual reality Viewmaster is going to feature Batman, according to this article by Variety

"And we’re not talking your childhood’s View-Master here: Mattel gave the iconic stereoscopic photo viewer a major make-over last year, releasing a version that’s basically a Google Cardboard-compatible virtual reality headset, to be used with any compatible Android or iOS phone.

Warner Bros. tasked its Blue Ribbon Content studio to cooperate closely with OTOY, which is known for cloud-based graphics processing and holographic imagery. “We are extremely excited for our fans to be able to experience ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ in a new and immersive way,” said Sam Register, President, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Digital Series.

Batman will only be the first of a number of characters to find a second life on the View-Master. Mattel has partnered with OTOY to produce more content for the platform, both companies announced Tuesday. “OTOY is the perfect partner to create new VR content for View-Master,” said Mark Morse, Director Advanced Concepts at Mattel.  “The Batman experience (is) just a glimpse into the incredible things to come from this collaboration."

Adam West, Burt Ward and Julie Newmar Voicing Classic Roles

DENVER – September 12, 2016 – Travel back to the 1960s as Batman and Robin spring into action when Gotham City is threatened by a quartet of Batman’s most fiendish foes. Audiences will have the opportunity to join all the animated excitement as it unfolds on the big screen for one special day. Fathom Events is once again partnering with Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment to bring “Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders” to movie theaters for three exclusive showings on Monday, October 10 at 2:00 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. local time, before it comes to Digital HD on October 11 and Blu-ray™ Combo Pack & DVD on November 1.

Bringing these iconic characters to animated life are Adam West (Batman), Burt Ward (Robin) and Julie Newmar (Catwoman). In the new film, Penguin, The Joker, Riddler and Catwoman have combined their wicked talents to hatch a plot so nefarious that the Dynamic Duo will need to go to outer space (and back) to foil their arch enemies and restore order in Gotham City.

In addition to the film, audiences will view an exclusive pre-screening introduction, and a post-screening preview of “Those Dastardly Desperados,” a featurette that explores how the villains became more than just antagonists in a Batman story – they became icons of American pop culture.

Tickets for “Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders” can be purchased beginning Friday, September 9, online by visiting or at participating theater box offices. Fans throughout the U.S. will be able to enjoy the event in more than 700 select movie theaters. “Fans have voiced a strong desire to see DC-centric animated films on the big screen for years, and ‘Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders’ offers another opportunity to entertain our audience with a highly-anticipated cinema event,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, Warner Bros. Joe Manganiello Cast As Deathstroke In Ben Affleck's Solo Batman Movie

Joe Manganiello Cast As Deathstroke In Ben Affleck's Solo Batman Movie
The rumors have been flying for the past few weeks, but now its official - Joe Manganiello will be Slade (Deathstroke) in the solo Batman movie that is being developed by Ben Affleck. Last week in an off-site article I discussed the pros/cons of the idea of Deathstroke being a villain in the film. Stay tuned to Legions of Gotham for the latest info on the solo Batman film.

The Best Batman Resources On The Net

The internet is full of half-baked websites and it can be difficult to sort out what the best resources are when you're surfing the search engines. I started Legions of Gotham back in 2003, because there was such a distinct lack of resources online for the fans. Nowadays things are different and there are tons of great sites out there. If you're looking to start your own website you can check out this site rating the top website builders on the market. If you're looking to surf another, we've taken the time to note some of the best ones available for you below.

If you're into official webpages, then you can't beat the DC Comics Batman site. The page is full of great information, including a Batman 101 video that gives a great overview of the character. There is also links to the latest Batman comics and info.

Wiki are another great resource for Batman and there are plenty of those out there. There is the official Batman Wiki, the DC Database and even the DCAU Wiki. These resources allow multiple fans to compile their collective knowlege to provide information on characters, origins, history, stories and more. These are a great place to start when seeking some base knowlege.

If you want to find information on the latest Batman movie news you will want to refer to Batman on Film. Jett and his BOF website have been around longer than Legions of Gotham and have a wonderful and trusted reputation with the fans.

Another great resource for Batman news is Batman Online. They are full of great info and are another trusted resource.

There are a number of websites that are still lingering around, but have not been updated in several years. Beware of information that you pull from many of these, as they were created in an era before the level of knowlege that we have in today's world existed. There was a time not so very long ago that the amount of information available online about the Dark Knight was fairly limited.

If you'd rather delve into print you can also check out our book, Batman's Arsenal: An Encyclopedic Chronicle. In the book I delve into the complete history of Batman from 1939 to present day, exploring his various tools of the trade, from his utility belt to the Batmobile. The book covers everything from the comics and cartoons to the movies. The full volume is nearly 500 pages and is a culmination of decades of historical research that reads like a college course on Batman. You can check out reviews and endorsements for the book on Amazon.

We also offer a great links page for your reference, you can find that on Legions of Gotham.
The moral of the story is be selective when researching the Caped Crusader online. There is a lot of conflicting information out there and sometimes its easy to keep passing around the same false assumptions, like the one many fans have about Batman using a gun in his early years. This only happened in a few issues and he never used it to kill a living human being (only vampires), another theme explored in depth in Batman's Arsenal: An Encyclopedic Chronicle.

The Best Batman Video and Online Games!

Batman fans have long enjoyed a rich tradition of video games to accompany their favorite DC Comics hero in his exploits. The tradition of Batman games harkens back to the original Nintendo in the 1980s and has remained a staple in gameplay ever since. In today's world gamers have a number of options outside of console games, from online games to online casino games. You can find a lot of these by scowering search engines and while you're at it you can check the top offers of the internet betting operators from this link. There are no shortage of popular games that have spawned from the Batman franchise, even long before the Arkham series came along. We'll examine a few for you below.

The Batman Lego video games offer some of the funnest gameplay, while also serving up a ton of easter eggs for the fans. The first time we saw a Batman Lego video game was the 2008 release, developed by Traveller's Tales, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, OS X and Wii video gaming platforms. The game features environments and characters made completely from Lego, but far from a simple kids game, the Lego Batman games offer a detailed and engaging story, as well. There have been two sequel games released, Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes in 2012 and Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham in 2014.

My personal favorite game was also the most challenging (at least for me personally) and that is the original Batman: The Video Game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The game is centered around the 1989 Tim Burton / Michael Keaton Batman film. This one was developed by Sunsoft and offers five levels of side scrolling action. The game offers animation scenes inbetween the levels and an ultimate battle with the Joker in the cathedral. The gameplay style can be likened to Ninja Gaiden (another of my favorite games...oh, wait...) and has cameos from some seriously cool DC Comics baddies, like Deadshot, KGBeast, Heat Wave, Maxie Zeus and Nightslayer. The bosses in the game include the Electrocutioner, Machine Intelligence System (which is damn hard) the Dual Container Alarm, Killer Moth and, of course, the Joker. There would be one sequel game produced, Batman: Return of the Joker, which got a lukewarm reception.

One of the more interesting Batman video games, without a doubt, was The Adventures of Batman & Robin, developed by Konami, for the Sega CD. The 1994 release game was based on the popular Batman: The Animated Series cartoon and even featured story advances throughout the gameplay that were fully animated by TMS, one of the companies that actually animated the on-air cartoon. When combined these scenes are affectionately known by fans as the "lost episode" of Batman: The Animated Series.

Recently, the Batman Akham series has made a splash with fans young and old. The games, including Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman: Arkham City, Batman: Arkham Origins and Batman: Arkham Knight  have all been huge hits. I have yet to play the newest game, Batman: The Telltale Series, but I hear good things.

Which Batman game is your favorite of all time? Sound off on our Facebook.

Which Batman Character Would Win In The Casino

Which Batman Character Would Win In The Casino

With the new release of Suicide Squad it is difficult not to get excited for all the up-coming DC films that will be introducing a whole new host of characters that haven’t seen movie screen time for a while. The new batman, Ben Affleck has also seen some screen time with his debut Batman vs.Superman, in the DC world where many superheroes and villains have been created through the terms of scientific error or manipulation it leaves us wondering with these met humans and extreme personalities who would come out on top with casinos and what games they would play.

Bruce Wayne, American billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, owner of Wayne Enterprises, and of course Batman. Previously played by Michael Keaton, George Clooney, Christian Bale and now Ben Affleck. Batman as a character has a genius-level of intelligence which would make him a great contender when it came to winning various casino games, now for the interesting part. Ben Affleck himself is incredibly skilled when it comes to the game of blackjack. Affleck took a great deal of time to learn the blackjack games, and he was so good the casinos asked him to stop. He has point blank refused that he does not use the method of card counting, which is not illegal in casinos but is renowned to be frowned upon.

Formerly the D.A of Gotham City, Harvey Dent was an ally of Batman and Commissioner Gordon until he had acid thrown onto the left side of his face by a mob boss, scarring him for life. This then drove Harvey insane and thus was born Two-Face, obsessed with chance and always carrying a double-headed coin which he flips to make every decision. Now depending on which game Two-Face plays, we’re guessing all games of chance which would mean keno, slot machines in which his trusty coin would come in handy, roulette and craps. Two-Face is a very clever opponent who knows a lot and he a great degree of skill as he was a former detective. If Two-Face was to use the Ladbrokes Casino Periodic Table, he would be able to sharpen up his casino term knowledge even more, and combined with the information about reading people that he already knows, he’d make a great poker pro.

Poison Ivy

Before Poison Ivy there was Pamela who was transformed by dangerous experiment in which she deliberately overdosed on plant and animal based toxins into her bloody. This then led to her having a deadly touch but also boosted her immunity to all poisons, viruses, bacteria and fungi. The reason as to why she could definitely win in the casino if she was playing classic casino games like blackjack, and poker is that her body produces pheromones that make people susceptible to mind control- this means that she could easily get her way in any game.

Mr Freeze

Mr Freeze wouldn’t win any casino game due to skill he would most likely freeze the area around him to manipulate the game, and then receive all the winnings. He has a refrigeration suit which grants him superhuman strength and durability so many players would probably be too scared of him to stop him.

Check Out Suicide Squad Harley Quinn's Costume Inspiration - Debbie Harry

Its not hard to see by the side-by-side images that punk rock legend Debbie Harry was the inspiration for the Harley Quinn costume in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie. This fact has already been stated, but to see these images together is rather sobering. There's inspired by..and then there's this! The Blondie lead singer was an underground fashion icon in her on right the late 70s and early 80s.

If you're reading this, you're probably not at the con either, so we're in the same boat, reading news online, lol. Here are some great pics from this morning's DC Collectibles panel courtesy of AFI. It has also been documented that the Batman: The Animated Series Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy figures were on display this week, but were not allowed to be photographed yet. I'm guessing they have a public reveal planned in some publication later this fall/winter.
