The Dark Knight Descends on the Asbury Park Boardwalk

The Dark Knight Descends on the Asbury Park Boardwalk

While everyone knows Batman comes from Gotham City, did you know that the Batman movies actually came from Asbury Park?

Michael Uslan, executive producer of the Batman film franchise and one of Asbury Park’s favorite sons, will be returning home on August 20, 2011 for a celebration of all things Batman to commemorate the release of his new memoir, The Boy Who Loved Batman.
Michael’s book tells his story of growing up around Asbury Park, feeding his imagination on a steady diet of Batman comic books. From the humble beginnings as the son of a mason – with no connections in Hollywood and no money to buy his way in – Michael eventually fulfilled his lifelong dream of turning his favorite childhood super-hero into a dark and serious movie giant. The Batman films have grossed nearly $2.7 billion in worldwide box office receipts, and Michael has succeeded in returning the character to his roots as a dark avenger fighting crime from the shadows.

During his 35 years in the film business, Michael has been executive producer of the Batman franchise of films starting with Tim Burton's 1989 tour de force Batman, as well as being involved with such films as National Treasure, Constantine and others. He won an Emmy Award for his animated series Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego. He also was behind the PBS film Three Sovereigns for Sarah as well as the TV movie based on Robin Cook's bestseller Harmful Intent. In addition, he has also authored a children's book and a book about Rock and Roll with Dick Clark.

On August 20, the Asbury Park Boardwalk will celebrate Batman in a series of events and book signings, culminating in a screening of 1989’s Batman hosted by Michael himself.

The schedule includes:

Noon – 1:30PM: The day starts off at 12 PM at The Sundry Times, Asbury’s own quirky, clever and fun beach shop and news stand, where fans will have their first opportunity to meet Michael live and in person to purchase their copy of The Boy Who Loved Batman and have it signed. Enjoy the unique, relaxed, and refreshing beach setting as Michael meets each lucky fan individually. This signing will end at 1:30PM, but don’t worry, there’s plenty more excitement at our next stop, Watermark.

The Asbury Park Boardwalk has been undergoing a remarkable transformation. It is a mix of modern amenities and soulful authenticity that transcends today’s perception of the Jersey shore. The New York Times describes it as a place where “the past stands vigil over the present” and declared that “Black and white, gay and straight, child-ridden and child-free: there’s a little of everything and everyone seems to feel at home.” This unique atmosphere has been nurtured carefully by developer Madison Marquette, a Washington, DC based retail real estate owner and operator that assumed control over the boardwalk’s redevelopment in 2006. A legendary vibrant music scene as well as award winning restaurants, shops, lounges and beaches is just a part of what has recently made the Asbury Park Boardwalk one of the most critically acclaimed destinations in the U.S. For more information, please visit
