Batman in the 21st Century

In 1940 he came, he saw, he conquered. Well, that is not terribly accurate. He certainly came as a comic book character and to his enraptured audience who followed his exploits, he certainly conquered. But that was in an earlier, more innocent time, a time when the world was still between the wars and enjoying life was the concern of most people. After all they had fought the great war and were entitled to some time off from world politics. And Batman’s world? Well, its place was in the comic books their children enjoyed!

But what of his world today? Well, he is still protecting Gotham, and beating just about everyone except when he lost at cards to the Joker in Season 2, Episode 18 "Almost Got 'Em" (Batman disguised as a croc is famously pummelled by the Joker's Four of a Kind before revealing his true identity - classic).

But what position does he hold in our lives today? Does he still relate as closely to us as he did at the time of his conception? Yes, thanks to film directors and Hollywood he is as alive now as he was 77 years ago. The between the war years may have passed into dim and distant memory but Batman is still out there doing what he does best, fighting off evil, saving his city from the corrupt forces that want to take over, ensuring that justice prevails.

And if that is what he is doing, then he must be a true hero for our times. Because in similar fashion our world is as scary as the 1940’s world he was born into. We have had the horrors of 9/11, the descent into the chaos of world terrorism, the scenarios of displaced and distressed children, civil wars of brother against brother and friend against friend.

Did the Hollywood Batman predict all of this or did he respond to it? Who knows? And does it matter? What is obvious and significant is that his movies mirror what is going on in the global  sphere. His defeat of Superman in the Dawn of Justice 2016 may well be the struggle between ruling partners when one partner decides to follow the corruption route. How real is that? Flick on the News any morning and you will hear of that scenario unfolding in one nation or another. Think of Joker who wants to plunge the world into chaos. You won’t have to look very far for the Joker in our midst. And in the middle of it all is Batman, who with his cars and extra skills, wants to rid his world of this evil.

His role is ridding Gotham of corruption. Extend your minds for a moment my friends. Imagine Gotham as your town or your country. Is there anyone who could say, hand on heart, that we don’t need Batman right now? I think I heard you say “No”, in fact I would be very surprised if I hadn’t heard you say that. Who could object to the solid values that this once upon a time comic book figure is bringing us? His apparel may be outlandish to us and dare any of us drive his cars but try applying his beliefs to our world and Wow!

And he is human too. Hard to believe, that but look at the very human crises he has had to face. Losing his father in tragic circumstances, overcoming his fear of bats with the mantra” feel the fear and do it anyway”, struggling with the role he has been given, always knowing that he wants an ordinary life but feeling morally obliged to follow the role he feels has been laid down for him.

Relevant to our times? Heck yes, very much yes. Almost two decades into the century we need Batman to spread his creed now more than ever. And to spread it in a way that will make people sit up and listen. Hollywood - we are depending on you to do the necessary.

Affleck Hints That 'The Batman' Movie Could Face Delay

Ben Affleck has been closely associated with the upcoming Batman solo film. We know very little thus far, but the fact that he is working on a script with Geoff Johns, Deathstroke makes and appearance and it's titled The Batman. We fans thought that the film was on the slate and as good as in pre-production status at this point, but Affleck doesn't sound quite so positive on the subject.

The Guardian recently spoke to Affleck and when they asked him if The Batman was his next film, he had this to say: "That's the idea. But it’s not a set thing and there’s no script. If it doesn’t come together in a way I think is really great, I’m not going to do it." If Affleck isn't on board to direct and if a good script isn't already on the table, we may have to wait awhile longer for that highly anticipated solo Batman film.

Stay tuned to Legions of Gotham for the latest.

This Mr. Robot Actress Should Be Ivy in 'Gotham City Sirens' - Not Megan Fox!

This Mr. Robot Actress Should Be Ivy in 'Gotham City Sirens' - Not Megan Fox!

Megan Fox threw her hat in the ring to portray Poison Ivy in the newly announced David Ayer helmed Gotham City Sirens film, alongside Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). This idea was met with a lot of criticism from the fans. Fortunately, she isn't the only actress sniffing around the role of Poison Ivy. Stephanie Corneliuss, who plays the beautiful, but evil Joanna Wellick in Mr. Robot, recently posted the following Tweets on the subject. She has our vote!

There are two different types of JLA toys...there is the stylized toyline and the adaptation of the basic large-scale figures that have become more popular over the last few years. Here is an example of one of those basic figures:

These are already showing up in stores around the country. The JLA figures are likely to follow by early January. Stay tuned to Legions of Gotham for the latest Justice League Action news!

This Joker Ugly Xmas Sweater Is Amazing!

Okay, so I have been reviewing products on here for well over a decade and I can honestly say that this is one of the coolest things I've ever been sent. I have a few other pop culture related "ugly xmas sweaters". I have a He-Man and a classic 80s Batman & Superman sweater, but they're more like sweatshirts with the "ugly sweater" design on them.

This product is an actual sweater and the official images that this site gives do not do this one justice. Not only does it look awesome, but its so warm and soft its ridiculous. I'm in Nebraska and we're getting the arctic cold front right now and I won't take this off. I've literally had it on for several days, seriously my wife is getting really aggrivated. I can't help it, its soft, warm and so much fun. Get this NOW, you won't regret it.

Warner Bros. Animation Begins Production on YOUNG JUSTICE Season 3

Warner Bros. Animation Begins Production on YOUNG JUSTICE Season 3
BURBANK, Calif. (November 7, 2016) — The Team is back and it’s “business as usual.” Warner Bros. Animation has begun production on a third season of all-new episodes of the acclaimed hit, action-animated series “Young Justice,” based on the characters from DC Entertainment. Season three promises new twists, turns and dangerous new threats for the team, but most importantly, the opportunity for fans to finally continue the adventures of some of their favorite Super Heroes. Further details about the new season — including premiere date and network partner — will be announced at a later time.

Heralded by Entertainment Weekly as one of the “9 Best Animated TV Series Drawn from Comics,” “Young Justice” has been equally praised by critics and viewers for its impressive visuals and rich storytelling. The series reached more than 25 million unique viewers in each of its two seasons on Cartoon Network.

“The affection that fans have had for ‘Young Justice,’ and their rallying cry for more episodes, has always resonated with us,” said Sam Register, President, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Digital Series.  "We are excited to bring the show back for this loyal fanbase and to provide an opportunity for new viewers to discover this excellent series.”

Producers Brandon Vietti (Batman: Under the Red Hood, Superman: Doomsday) and Greg Weisman (Star Wars Rebels, Gargoyles) will be returning to the series.

In “Young Justice,” the teenage Super Heroes of the DC Universe come of age in a world of super powers, Super-Villains and super secrets. Used strategically as the secret covert weapon of the Justice League, Nightwing, Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and a host of others strive to prove to their legendary mentors, as well as to themselves, that they have what it takes to be heroes.
