Adam West, Legendary Star of '66 Batman, Dead at 88

Adam West, possibly the most well known Batman of all-time, died today at the age of 88. West embraced his camp role in his later years, and he always treated the fans with respect, as well as the mantle of the Bat. He liked to refer to his version of Batman as the "White Knight".

On a personal note, Mr. West gave me my first big interview back in 2003 and he was generous enough to write a preface for my book, Batman's Arsenal. My first memories as a child are of watching the 1966 Batman series when I was three years old. He always has been and always will be my favorite Batman, even if the show is hard to watch as an adult.

The fans will never forget Mr. West, may he rest in peace. Our condolences to his family and friends.

Wonder Woman Makes Box Office History!

The new Wonder Woman film has been highly anticipated by DC Comics fans for ages now and the results don't seem to disappoint. The movie opened this past weekend to a box office smash. The film, starring Gal Gadot as the Amazonian princess, set records for June openings and also opened the highest of any film that was ever directed by a woman! This is not only amazing news for comic book fans and fans of Wonder Woman, but fans of female driven entertainment everywhere. The diversity that comes with female writers, directors etc. is widely underrated in American cinema, so hopefully these new developments will help to smash the glass ceiling from now on.

Director Patty Jenkins has a bright future in the industry, now that her film has smashed the box office into pieces! The movie is so well received by the fans that it is currently enjoying a 93% approval rating by both the fans and the reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes, which is virtually unheard of. The movie is getting rave reviews from fans and general audiences alike. To contrast that score, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has a meager 27% rating from the critics and 63% from the more forigiving audiences. Suicide Squad also has a sad rating of 25% from critics and 62% by fans. The two films both featured Batman, while Wonder Woman doesn't feature any appearances from Batman, Superman or the rest of the Justice League. The film is completely Wonder Woman centric, which is also what makes it such a phenomenal achievement.

If Wonder Woman was looking for entertainment, she'd likely visit the awesome 7Sultans online promotions. You just can't fight the evils of the world nonstop, you need to relax at places like 7Sultans online casino.

We here at Legions of Gotham haven't gotten out to the theater to see Wonder Woman yet, so we cannot comment on the film, but the previews certainly look promising. The DC Film Universe has been a disappointing cluster of rubbish for the most part, so we're hoping that Wonder Woman will be the shinnig beacon in a world of misses and overshoots. Suicide Squad had so much potential, but again fell flat with a generic story and that awful douche sleazy stripclub owner Joker. A healthy respect for the characters is what needs to be preserved and hopefully what Patty Jenkins was able to do with Wonder Woman. Hollywood needs to learn that not only are the female characters popular and sustaining, but also that the source material is already there and should be used to the fullest extent. They always think that they know better than the decades of already proven history that comic books provide. Hopefully, that will change very soon, so that we fans get more films like Wonder Woman and less like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Jutice.

Did you see Wonder Woman this weekend? What were your thoughts on it? Sound off on our Facebook or Twitter pages with your opinions Bat-Fans!

Batman and Harley Quinn Spawn a Host of Spin-offs

Image Source: Teaser Trailer via Facebook

As a character, Batman is no stranger to the world of animation, but the cartoon version of the Caped Crusader is making a welcome return to our screens in his latest adventure. Director Sam Liu oversees a cast of familiar voice actors including Melissa Rauch, Paget Brewster and John DiMaggio and early reviews suggest it’s a "must-see" even for die-hard Batman fans who prefer the Superhero in his real-life form.

Unlikely hero?

In the latest offering, Batman teams up once again with Nightwing but they have what is perhaps an unlikely assistant; Harley Quinn originally appeared as the Joker’s love interest in the 1992 Animation Joker’s Favor. Over the years she has proved so popular that the character has endured and for 2017, Harley is crossing over from the dark side to fight the threat to global civilisation posed by the Plant-Master and Poison Ivy.

But no more spoilers; reviews are encouraging but you’ll have to judge and find out the remainder of the plot by watching the movie yourself. One thing is certain, the arrival of any new Batman movie will herald a flood of new properties and merchandising but, as we hit the 80th anniversary of the original DC Comics series, the arrival of Superhero spin offs will intensify even further.

Action Figures
It’s interesting that while Batman has endured as a Superhero in various forms for 80 years now, a lot of the attention is on Harley Quinn as the movie hits our cinemas. Action figures of Harley are nothing new and they have been available in assorted guises since she first came into the public conscience in 1992 but the new, animated version adds a new dimension and the new dolls will naturally be something of a must for collectors.

Her costume gives more than just a nod to the Joker and she retains that air of mystery and sensuality, even now that she’s on the good side. Figures of Nightwing and Batman himself are also available for purchase but they have been pushed to one side somewhat by the emergence of their new sidekick.

Playing the slots
This may be seen as one of the more unusual spin offs, but action heroes and slot games have always been very compatible ever since casinos started to go online in the second half of the 1990s. Batman has already appeared in a number of games and the new movie is a natural fit, and with the fuss being created by Harley, the choice of slots featuring the more established hero is certain to be a big hit. To be specific, Sun Bingo slot games already include a popular range of Batman games - based on the retro animated series - and in the weeks that follow the release of the new movie, interest will no doubt intensify.

Dress like a Hero

Whatever your views may be surrounding cosplay, the practise of dressing up as your favourite action hero is not a new one. Sales and hires of Batman costumes are always on the rise in the wake of a new release and that trend will sustain following the screening of this latest film.

Once again, Harley Quinn takes more of a centre stage but the traditional cape of the superhero has been ditched in favour of the short rockabilly style dress that was more synonymous with her earlier incarnations. We may not get to see an animated version of this iconic outfit but the dress will become more widely available and attract even more sales now that Harley is getting so much attention.

Mugs, posters and t-shirts will go on to form some of the more conventional forms of memorabilia when Batman and Harley Quinn reaches our cinemas and leads to a glut of merchandise and other properties as fans continue to catch up with the latest release.

The producers have been very intuitive in taking an already established character in Harley, and switching her to the good side as she joins Batman’s battle to uphold law and order. It’s a smart move that avoids having to take the gamble of introducing new characters and as such, she will appeal to long term fans as well as new additions to the series. So, if you love the new animation, there are plenty of spin offs that can help you to treasure its memory.

Five Places Where We'd Like to See Batman this Spring

Credit: Pixabay
Batman is one busy guy. As well as regularly appearing on our TV screens, at the cinema, in comic strips and at conventions up and down the country, he is also showing up in some more everyday locations. For example, on a trip far away from Gotham City, he recently visited Norwich Castle Mall in a replica Batmobile from the 1989 Batman Film. Eve since he introduced himself to the wide public as played by Adam West in the television series that ran from 1966 to 1968, Batman has been a favourite pop culture icon, and for a number of reasons - not only marketing either - he's never been absent from the spotlight. Here are five of our favourite places that we’d like Batman pop up in soon.

At A Party

What better place for the superhero to show up than at a party? Ideally, we'd like him to pop up at a special themed event to enjoy the different treats on offer. There are many different types of Batman decorations available to create the right atmosphere including plates, cups, napkins, tablecloths, banners and black balloons to hang in the Batcave. Party Delights, for instance, offers over 110 individual Batman-themed products. Add to this some Penguin Punch or Joker Juice and the scene is set for a great night. A recent Buzzfeed article lists seven Batman character-inspired cocktails which seem ideal for such a party. Let’s just hope he shows up to join in the fun.

In a marathon

With the days getting longer and the nights lighter, spring is the perfect time to get outside and exercise more. For the runners (or spectators) amongst us, another great place to see Batman is in a marathon race. Robin currently holds the world half-marathon record for the fastest time recorded by a male dressed in superhero costume (1:09:33) with Batman not far behind (1:10:45). The marathon world record for a runner in a superhero costume currently lies with Wonder Woman though! This means the Virgin Money London Marathon, which takes place on the 23rd of April, is the perfect opportunity for Batman to show up and get on the leader board.

In Online Gaming

If spotting Batman in a road race sounds a bit too energetic for some of you, then another great place for him to appear would be in online games. There are quite a few genres to consider here. At the moment, thematic, officially licenced slots, such as those offered by Betway Casino, make great use of their different themes from across pop culture. In the Jurassic Park one, for example, the five different reels feature familiar creatures from the film such at the T-Rex, the Velociraptor, the Brachiosaurus, the Triceratops and the Dilophosaurus, all estimated to have inhabited the earth about 190 million years ago. Added to this title is a realistic tropical rainforest background, animated sequences and sound effects in keeping with the prehistoric setting. In other gaming genres, there are already some Batman games out. Web gaming hub Heroes Arcade has collected and provides free opportunities to play platform, action and more types of Batman-themed games from all over the web, even including Batman Dress Up and beat'em up title Batman Underground. It would be interesting to see Batman be developed in even more ways in gaming, with the Batcave being used as a backdrop for games to be played out against.

In a restaurant

credit: Pixabay
Another exciting place for Batman to appear at would be in a restaurant. Imagine sharing your meal with him and Robin or having the superhero take care of your bill for you. While it can’t be guaranteed that Batman will pay a flying visit, there are places to eat that offer themed food. There's an official DC Comics cafe at the Pavilion Mall in Kuala Lumpur which offers delights such as the Dark Knight Burger, which is served in a charcoal coloured bun, followed by Batman ice cream. A bit closer to home, Area 52 cafe in London also serves superhero inspired meals and decor. Watch out for Batman toys in fast food restaurants too – there have been plenty of giveaways by big names over the years, including McDonalds and Pizza Hut.

In new kinds of merchandise

A last place we’d like Batman to pop up in is in the form of even more unusual and quirkier types of merchandise. There are currently stacks of Batman toys, items of clothing and costumes, electronic goods, stickers and collectible items available for the discerning superhero fan. It’s also good to see new items coming onto the scene though. Last Christmas for example, it was great to see novelty jumpers that featured Batman and Robin, with designs including Fairisle as well as other characters such as The Joker in them too.
The new Lego Movie, which has grossed more than $173,000,000 so far, has also introduced different types of merchandise, with the five most popular new items amongst fans being Lego key ring lights, the Joker’s Notorious Low Rider, mini-figures set, Scarecrow Special Delivery and Batgirl Batjet Chase. With opportunities for appearing limitless, remember to keep your eyes peeled for Batman whenever you are out and about as he is sure to appear in one guise or another somewhere soon!

There has only ever been one Batgirl appearance on the big screen and that was in the ill-fated Joel Schumacher debacle, "Batman & Robin" back in 1997. The idea behind this film is to follow the lead of "Suicide Squad" and "Wonder Woman" by making a strong and clear vision of Barbara Gordon that can interact with the new cinematic universe, possibly in the upcoming "Gotham City Sirens" film, which is a sequel to "Suicide Squad".

No release date or casting details have been revealed. Stay tuned to Legions of Gotham for the latest on "Batgirl".

Batman in the 21st Century

In 1940 he came, he saw, he conquered. Well, that is not terribly accurate. He certainly came as a comic book character and to his enraptured audience who followed his exploits, he certainly conquered. But that was in an earlier, more innocent time, a time when the world was still between the wars and enjoying life was the concern of most people. After all they had fought the great war and were entitled to some time off from world politics. And Batman’s world? Well, its place was in the comic books their children enjoyed!

But what of his world today? Well, he is still protecting Gotham, and beating just about everyone except when he lost at cards to the Joker in Season 2, Episode 18 "Almost Got 'Em" (Batman disguised as a croc is famously pummelled by the Joker's Four of a Kind before revealing his true identity - classic).

But what position does he hold in our lives today? Does he still relate as closely to us as he did at the time of his conception? Yes, thanks to film directors and Hollywood he is as alive now as he was 77 years ago. The between the war years may have passed into dim and distant memory but Batman is still out there doing what he does best, fighting off evil, saving his city from the corrupt forces that want to take over, ensuring that justice prevails.

And if that is what he is doing, then he must be a true hero for our times. Because in similar fashion our world is as scary as the 1940’s world he was born into. We have had the horrors of 9/11, the descent into the chaos of world terrorism, the scenarios of displaced and distressed children, civil wars of brother against brother and friend against friend.

Did the Hollywood Batman predict all of this or did he respond to it? Who knows? And does it matter? What is obvious and significant is that his movies mirror what is going on in the global  sphere. His defeat of Superman in the Dawn of Justice 2016 may well be the struggle between ruling partners when one partner decides to follow the corruption route. How real is that? Flick on the News any morning and you will hear of that scenario unfolding in one nation or another. Think of Joker who wants to plunge the world into chaos. You won’t have to look very far for the Joker in our midst. And in the middle of it all is Batman, who with his cars and extra skills, wants to rid his world of this evil.

His role is ridding Gotham of corruption. Extend your minds for a moment my friends. Imagine Gotham as your town or your country. Is there anyone who could say, hand on heart, that we don’t need Batman right now? I think I heard you say “No”, in fact I would be very surprised if I hadn’t heard you say that. Who could object to the solid values that this once upon a time comic book figure is bringing us? His apparel may be outlandish to us and dare any of us drive his cars but try applying his beliefs to our world and Wow!

And he is human too. Hard to believe, that but look at the very human crises he has had to face. Losing his father in tragic circumstances, overcoming his fear of bats with the mantra” feel the fear and do it anyway”, struggling with the role he has been given, always knowing that he wants an ordinary life but feeling morally obliged to follow the role he feels has been laid down for him.

Relevant to our times? Heck yes, very much yes. Almost two decades into the century we need Batman to spread his creed now more than ever. And to spread it in a way that will make people sit up and listen. Hollywood - we are depending on you to do the necessary.

Affleck Hints That 'The Batman' Movie Could Face Delay

Ben Affleck has been closely associated with the upcoming Batman solo film. We know very little thus far, but the fact that he is working on a script with Geoff Johns, Deathstroke makes and appearance and it's titled The Batman. We fans thought that the film was on the slate and as good as in pre-production status at this point, but Affleck doesn't sound quite so positive on the subject.

The Guardian recently spoke to Affleck and when they asked him if The Batman was his next film, he had this to say: "That's the idea. But it’s not a set thing and there’s no script. If it doesn’t come together in a way I think is really great, I’m not going to do it." If Affleck isn't on board to direct and if a good script isn't already on the table, we may have to wait awhile longer for that highly anticipated solo Batman film.

Stay tuned to Legions of Gotham for the latest.

This Mr. Robot Actress Should Be Ivy in 'Gotham City Sirens' - Not Megan Fox!

This Mr. Robot Actress Should Be Ivy in 'Gotham City Sirens' - Not Megan Fox!

Megan Fox threw her hat in the ring to portray Poison Ivy in the newly announced David Ayer helmed Gotham City Sirens film, alongside Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). This idea was met with a lot of criticism from the fans. Fortunately, she isn't the only actress sniffing around the role of Poison Ivy. Stephanie Corneliuss, who plays the beautiful, but evil Joanna Wellick in Mr. Robot, recently posted the following Tweets on the subject. She has our vote!
